I performed a system recovery on my computer, but all the files are now stored in USERDATA as well. When I check the properties of the folder it says there are no files and no space being taken up, and when I try to enter, it says Access Denied. & i can't access the folder.. When I use Norton antivirus it scans those supposed files! How can I fix this? please helpl me at: I have some important data which i want to access immediately .plz
thanks

Re: cant acess

Salaam Sarmad,
Try to scan again with Norton, then view the quarantined items and click on "add item." This may restore the files.

Re: cant acess

Sarmad,
If my previous suggestion does not work, I would suggest this:
1. Log in as 'administrator' in 'Safe Mode' (before you see the windows xp splash screen hit F8 on your keyboard)
2. Open Windows Explorer
3. Right click on the 'Userdata' folder and choose 'Properties'.
4. Go to the 'Security' Tab and click on 'Advanced'
5. In the 'Advanced' dialog go to the 'Owner' tab.
6. Check who the owner is. If there is none, or it is to a user from a previous install, you will need to choose a user from the 'Change Owner to' list.
7. Turn on the 'Replace owner on subcontainer and objects' switch, and click the apply button.
8. Close the dialogs.
9. now try to access the folder.

Re: cant acess

EDIT: *** Sorry Mad4Cricket, this is basically what you said ***

If you have a HP puter you may want to try this, if you dont then it probably isnt a good idea:

HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Unable to Access Data from User Accounts after a System Recovery in Windows XP Click the image to open in full size.Click the image to open in full size. Click the image to open in full size.
ISSUE: When a user creates multiple accounts and saves information onto each account, the information is stored under that account name. If a non-destructive system recovery is then run on the system, the customer cannot access the necessary files of the account, although the files are stored in each account.

SOLUTION: In order to resolve this issue we need to change the security privileges of the folder to enable access to each of the folders. Follow these steps to gain access to the folders:
  1. Restart the computer into Safe Mode.
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Power on, and when the blue HP Invent or Compaq screen appears, keep tapping F8 . This displays the Windows Advanced Options Menu .
    3. Use the arrow keys to move up to Safe Mode and press Enter .
    4. Press Enter on Microsoft Windows Whistler Personal or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition .
  2. Click Administrator and, if applicable, enter the password and press Enter .
  3. A window will appear asking you for confirmation of keeping in Safe Mode . Click Yes .
  4. Click Start and My Computer . Then, double-click the main hard drive ( C: ) and Documents and Settings .
  5. Right-click the folder name of the user account and click Properties .
  6. Click Security .
  7. Click Advanced .
  8. Click Owner (see Figure 1 arrow 1).
  9. Place a check mark in Replace owner on subcontainers and objects (see Figure 1 arrow 2). Figure 1: Advanced Security Settings
Click the image to open in full size.
  10. Click Apply .
  11. Click Yes to the security message.
  12. Click OK .
  13. Click OK again.
  14. Restart the computer and access will be granted to all folders of the user accounts.

Thnks for graphic but there is a problem when u restart and start windows again in normal then again u face the same problem . The solution for this is when u change the owner in safe mode. and u can access the users data u have to copy paste the data in the adminstators folder. only then it will work . Thanks for all u guys who come farwrd to help me out . Really appreciated from the bottom of my heart
